The Story of Villa Regina: History & Background

Villa Regina is a city in the General Roca Department of the province of Río Negro, Argentina. The city is connected to the rest of the towns in the Upper Río Negro Valley via National Route 22.

The city was built by the Italian-Argentine Colonization Company (Spanish: Compañía Italo-Argentina de Colonización), which purchased 5,000 hectares for urban development from the estate of Manuel Zorrilla. The lands were divided into four zones of 1,300 hectares, 1,200 hectares, 1,300 hectares, and 1,200 hectares. These zones were then subdivided into lots, which were sold to families that immigrated to Argentina from Italy. The settlement was established on November 7, 1924. It was originally named Colonia Regina de Alvear, after the wife of then-president Marcelo T. de Alvear, who had approved the project. The company developed the town with the help of Italian investors. In 1930, the government of Rio Negro created the municipality of Villa Regina, dissolving the Italian-Argentine Colonization Company. By 1939, the development of the four zones was completed. In 1987 the town wrote its first constitution, doing away with the position of municipal president and replacing it with the position of mayor.

Villa Regina is considered the capital of the Eastern Upper Valley micro-region. The surrounding area produces a large portion of the apple and pear harvests of Patagonia and also has a sizable grape harvest. The economy of the town is complemented by its canning and bottling plants, which compose the local industrial park. The city celebrates the Provincial Grape Harvest Festival annually and also hosts the National Comahue Fair biennially.

The Beauty of Villa Regina

What people mean when they call Villa Regina beautiful is usually street life: main-street architecture, local signage and the evening rhythm that makes a town photogenic rather than just populated. The light does most of the work: mid-latitude light gives the place two looks: clean blue summer noon and a low amber angle in spring and autumn. The seasons restyle everything around it - stone and brick hold their colour year-round; what changes is crowd density and the angle of light down the main streets. And the beauty compounds with context: with 7 other verified places nearby, the VILLA REGINA area reads as one continuous landscape rather than a single viewpoint, which is worth more than any filter on the photos you take here.

Getting There

The nearest postal locality is VILLA REGINA (8336), which is what local directions and navigation apps will reference.

Best Time to Visit

Southern-hemisphere seasonality applies in Argentina: December to March is summer and peak season, while June to August is the cool, quiet (and often rainy or snowy) months. Book holiday-week stays early and check local event calendars before fixing dates.

Villa Regina Season by Season

  • Summer (Dec-Feb) - peak season: the warmest, longest days and everything open, which also makes it the priciest and busiest window
  • Autumn (Mar-May) - shoulder season: crowds drain away, the light turns photographic, and lodging rates typically fall
  • Winter (Jun-Aug) - off-season: cheapest beds and empty viewpoints, but check for closures, snow or rain before committing
  • Spring (Sep-Nov) - rebuild season: wildflowers, newborn wildlife and reopened facilities - the best balance if the weather holds

Things to Do

Planning what to actually do at Villa Regina comes down to the setting it sits in:

  • Arrive with the exact coordinates (-39.0963, -67.0837) pinned in your maps app — rural place names repeat across states
  • Cluster the old downtown/core district on foot and save the car for outlying attractions
  • Check the city's event calendar the week before — festivals redefine parking and hotel rates
  • Look for the free walking-tour or visitor centre as the fastest orientation
  • Chain the stop with what is nearby — see the list below before fixing your day route

None of this needs a rigid schedule - the honest pattern at Villa Regina is one anchor at the historic core or main square, one longer stop, and the rest of the time left for whatever looks better from the car window. That flexibility is what separates a good half-day from a rushed one.

A Perfect Day in Villa Regina

Morning (start early). Have breakfast at Villa Regina and roll out before mid-morning - the light is softer, parking is open, and Villa Regina is at its quietest before the day-trippers arrive. Give the main stop its full due first rather than saving it for later.

Midday. From Villa Regina, Mainqué is only 19 km away - pair the two rather than driving home for lunch; a picnic beats a reservation near most of these spots.

Afternoon. Keep going to Cerro Negro (62 km) if the group still has legs; it is the standard second half of this loop.

Golden hour. End at the main viewpoint, waterfront or main street as the light drops; this is the hour Villa Regina is genuinely famous for locally, and it costs nothing.

Evening. Sleep at Villa Regina unless the road out is long - leaving at dusk is the one mistake that can flatten an otherwise perfect day.
